Critically Endangered Western Lowland Gorilla Born at London Zoo

The newborn, whose sex is yet to be determined, marks a significant milestone for the species that has seen a drastic decline over the past few decades.

• A critically endangered western lowland gorilla has been born at London Zoo, marking a significant event for the species which has seen a decline of over 60% in the past 20-25 years due to poaching and disease.
• The mother, Mjukuu, went into labour on Wednesday and the birth was monitored via CCTV cameras installed in the dens. The sex of the infant is yet to be confirmed.
• The infant was fathered by Kiburi, who arrived at London Zoo from Tenerife in November 2022 as part of an international conservation breeding programme.
• The newborn gorilla will remain in close contact with its mother for about the first six months of its life.
• Zookeepers will give the mother and baby plenty of time and space to bond, and for the rest of the troop to get used to their new addition.
