Overview
- The binational Cristo Redentor–Los Libertadores corridor will reopen on Sunday for all vehicles, authorities confirmed Saturday night.
- The crossing had been closed since Wednesday as an intense mountain storm dumped about 50 cm of snow on the Argentine side and around 70 cm at the Chilean customs complex.
- Route 7 was previously declared intransitable from Uspallata to the tunnel due to heavy snow, whiteout conditions and localized rockfall, with road crews working to widen and clear the shoulders.
- Roughly 2,000 trucks are queued to cross once traffic resumes, according to the Argentine truck owners’ association, which urged caution during the restart.
- Other major Andean crossings, including Pino Hachado, Cardenal Samoré and Pehuenche, were also closed during the storm, while some minor routes operated on restricted hours with mandatory chains.
