Crime Branch Takes Over Virar Collapse Probe After Five Arrests

The investigation is now focused on alleged oversight failures following May warnings to audit the building’s safety.

Overview

  • Seventeen people were killed when a wing of the unauthorised Ramabai Apartment in Virar East collapsed just after midnight on August 27.
  • Police have arrested builder Nittal Gopinath Sane and four members of the late landowner Parshuram Dalvi’s family, with all five set to appear before the Vasai Sessions Court as Crime Branch Unit 3 leads the case.
  • Virar police say VVCMC issued May notices to the builder and plot owners to conduct a structural audit and ask residents to vacate, but no follow-up occurred; both wings were built without approvals.
  • Minister Pratap Sarnaik said MHADA will provide 60 temporary homes in Bolinj by Saturday for displaced residents, while 28 adjacent families evacuated as a precaution report limited shelter and basic aid from the civic body.
  • Thane Municipal Corporation ordered immediate evacuation of 37 highly dangerous (C1) buildings housing 191 families, as state leaders also pledged post-festival demolition of 141 unauthorised structures and faster cluster and SRA rehabilitation in Vasai-Virar.
