Overview
- San Antonio is installing rainbow and transgender-flag-themed sidewalk art next to North Main Avenue and East Evergreen Street, with completion expected by Friday.
- The rainbow crosswalks will be removed and replaced with standard white striping Jan. 12–15 after TxDOT denied the city’s exemption to the governor’s directive.
- City officials estimate the combined sidewalk art and crosswalk replacement will cost about $170,000 from Public Works operational funds using existing contractors without a council vote.
- Pieces of the current rainbow crosswalks will be saved before resurfacing for potential future art installations.
- Council members Misty Spears and Marc Whyte criticized the spending as promoting individual viewpoints, while the city notes pedestrian injuries have not increased since the 2018 installation.
