Crews Hold Izman Creek and Whelan Creek Fires as Heat and Winds Intensify

Fire services have updated the Lytton blaze’s perimeter and maintain evacuation alerts while crews brace for a heat wave and gusty winds.

Overview

  • The Izman Creek fire north of Lytton has been precisely mapped at 242.8 hectares, with three properties under evacuation order and a wider alert still in place.
  • BC Wildfire Service has 67 firefighters on the ground supported by five helicopters, heavy machinery and structure protection crews along Highway 12.
  • Forecasts call for highs of 35 °C, humidity around 15 % and southwesterly winds gusting to 50–60 km/h on July 8–9, posing fresh challenges for containment.
  • The Whelan Creek fire east of Kelowna International Airport is held at 4.31 hectares, with seven homes evacuated and evacuation alerts issued for 106 other addresses.
  • RCMP and local fire departments have conducted tactical evacuations, deployed air tankers and helicopters, and cautioned campers near Postill Lake to leave as a precaution.
