Córdoba Rescuers Save Man Trapped in Garbage Truck Compactor

Police say the incident reflects recurring dangers for people who seek shelter inside waste containers.

Overview

  • Walter Gabriel Banegas, 35, had slept inside a public container during rain and cold in the Nueva Córdoba neighborhood.
  • The LAM collection crew emptied the bin, the compactor started automatically, and the truck traveled about 300 meters along Avenida Vélez Sarsfield.
  • Workers and passersby heard his screams from the truck and stopped the mechanism before alerting authorities.
  • Policía de Córdoba and the DUAR unit carried out the rescue, and a 107 ambulance transported him on a spinal board to Hospital Misericordia.
  • Doctors reported polytrauma with multiple fractures to his upper and lower limbs and a stable condition, and police warned this is not an isolated occurrence.
