Córdoba Confirms First H3N2 Subclade K Cases Linked to Travel

Health authorities say there is no evidence of community spread in the province.

Overview

  • Two infections were confirmed by Instituto Malbrán in a 27-year-old man from San Francisco with travel to Mexico and a 38-year-old woman from La Calera who had traveled to Spain.
  • Both patients received outpatient care and recovered without requiring hospitalization, according to the provincial health ministry.
  • Four additional local samples from Córdoba are under full-genome sequencing at Malbrán to assess whether the variant is present beyond the confirmed cases.
  • Nationally, detections have now been reported in eight provinces, with Córdoba and Corrientes newly confirmed and a total of 15 cases counted to date.
  • Officials urge vaccination and standard respiratory precautions, noting the K subclade may spread more easily but has not shown increased clinical severity, with older adults, young children, pregnant people and those with chronic conditions at higher risk.
