Crashphalt Becomes Proxy for Online Undertale Co‑op

The Crashphalt developer has publicly welcomed a community file‑copy trick that uses Steam Remote Play to run the Undertale Together mod online.

Overview

  • Players discovered a workaround that makes the Undertale Together local‑only mod work over the internet by copying a Remote Play‑enabled game's installation files into the modded Undertale folder and renaming Undertale.exe to match the host game.
  • A December 2, 2022 YouTube tutorial popularized the method and appears to be the key vector that spread the workaround through the community.
  • SteamDB and reporting show a sharp resurgence in Crashphalt activity after the workaround circulated, with peak daily players jumping dramatically in late 2022 and the game gaining hundreds of Steam reviews after January 2023.
  • Crashphalt’s developer, RetroSpecter of Cold Pressed Games, wrote on Reddit that they do not object to the repurposing, note the only technical requirement is Remote Play support, and say they find the game’s second life cool.
  • The same Remote Play proxy has been used for Deltarune as well, producing another activity spike around Deltarune’s June 2025 Steam launch and showing how small, free indie titles can be repurposed by modding communities.
