CPPU Backs São Paulo LED Panel Plan for Downtown ‘Boulevard São João’
A three-year cooperation pact requires restoration works with strict limits on sponsor visibility.
Overview
- City landscape council approved the project in an 8–6 vote under the Lei Cidade Limpa’s cooperation mechanism.
- Panels may show up to 30% sponsor identification with 70% reserved for cultural or public-service content, with bans on retail ads, gambling, adult or violent imagery, and political or religious messages.
- Displays must operate only from 05:00 to 23:00 with luminosity controls to protect neighbors and traffic safety.
- Installations are slated for four buildings along the Ipiranga–São João axis, with projection mapping on the protected Edifício Independência’s façade.
- Contrapartidas include restoring the Rosário church façade, the Mãe Preta monument, and the Nichile clock, plus new benches and bins, with R$ 2 million per year for three years and an estimated R$ 42 million for panel implementation, subject to monthly monitoring, possible license revocation, an open public consultation through 24 March, and a stated aim to begin installation in March.
