CPCB Report Warns of Unsafe Ganges Water During Maha Kumbh

High levels of faecal bacteria in Prayagraj's Sangam waters raise health concerns, while UP CM Yogi Adityanath disputes findings, calling the water safe.

  • The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported faecal coliform levels in the Ganges at Prayagraj far exceeding the safe limit of 2,500 units per 100 millilitres, with readings as high as 11,000 units after major bathing events.
  • Faecal coliform bacteria, an indicator of sewage contamination, can pose serious health risks including gastrointestinal infections, skin issues, and respiratory illnesses for those exposed to the water.
  • The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dismissed the CPCB's findings, asserting that the water quality is fit for bathing and even drinking, and accused critics of spreading misinformation against the Maha Kumbh.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) criticized the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board for failing to provide adequate measures and detailed reports addressing the pollution concerns raised by the CPCB.
  • Over 56 crore devotees have participated in the Maha Kumbh 2025 so far, with experts and environmental authorities urging stricter measures to ensure water safety for pilgrims.
