Overview

  • The Corporation for Public Broadcasting will end most operations and staff positions by September 30, 2025, with a small transition team remaining through January 2026 to oversee final distributions and obligations.
  • Congress rescinded $1.1 billion in CPB funding this July, ending over five decades of federal support for more than 1,500 public radio and television stations.
  • NPR has committed $8 million from its own budget to help member stations cover sudden revenue gaps caused by the loss of CPB grants.
  • PBS and its locally owned member stations have launched emergency fundraising campaigns to replace federal grants, especially in rural and underserved markets.
  • The transition team will focus on compliance, music rights and royalties, and legal and financial obligations as the public media system shifts to new funding structures.
