Overview
- ODFW says a coyote grabbed a 9-year-old’s foot in Portland’s Alameda neighborhood on Oct. 23 as two children played hide-and-seek; the child slipped out of a sock and escaped as their father yelled the animal away.
- The child was treated for minor injuries, and officials confirmed the bite punctured the skin and the child is receiving post-exposure rabies treatment.
- Wildlife staff conducted a site investigation on Oct. 24, posted flyers and social notices, and continue to monitor the area while coordinating with the City of Portland and federal partners.
- Residents are urged to supervise young children, haze bold coyotes by yelling or using noisemakers or thrown objects, remove attractants, and avoid feeding coyotes, which is illegal under ORS 496.731.
- An ODFW biologist called the event very unusual and asked the public to report aggressive encounters to 971-673-6000 or call 911 in an emergency.
