Coyote Bites 9-Year-Old in Northeast Portland During Yard Play

State wildlife officials have opened an investigation with active neighborhood monitoring.

Overview

  • The attack occurred Oct. 24 around 6:15 p.m. in the Alameda neighborhood as two children played hide-and-seek, when a coyote grabbed the 9-year-old’s foot and chased the child until the father yelled it away.
  • The child was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and escaped by shaking free of a sock, with biologists describing such incidents as very unusual for the area.
  • ODFW visited the site the next day, conducted an investigation, and notified residents through flyers and social media.
  • Officials report continued monitoring and outreach in the neighborhood while coordinating next steps with the City of Portland and other authorities.
  • Residents are urged to closely supervise young children, haze coyotes with loud noise or thrown objects, remove attractants, never feed coyotes (illegal under ORS 496.731), and report aggressive encounters to ODFW or call 911 during an attack.
