The victims' group urges a sanctioning regime to curb public glorification of ETA.

Overview

  • According to Covite, 26 of the 135 events were enabled by EH Bildu–led councils that placed them in official festival programmes.
  • The rest were promoted by EH Bildu and Sortu, with participation from associations in the abertzale sphere such as Sare, the group says.
  • Documented displays included banners, graffiti and posters of imprisoned ETA members, along with toasts, dances and concerts praising them and calling for release.
  • Covite warns that these messages in popular festival settings risk distorting the memory of terrorism for younger generations and heightening violent radicalization.
  • The association cites a pending proposal in the Basque Parliament for an administrative sanctioning regime modeled on Law 9/2023 and says approval depends on political will.
