Court Suspends Pity Álvarez Trial Pending Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation

A civil court ordered a 90-day involuntary hospitalization that puts the Cuerpo Médico Forense assessment at the center of whether the criminal case will resume or be further paused.

Overview

  • The oral homicide trial was paused after Tribunal Oral en lo Criminal y Correccional N°29 ordered an interdisciplinary forensic evaluation to be carried out at the Cuerpo Médico Forense on Monday, October 5.
  • A separate civil court, Juzgado Civil N°4, ordered a 90-day involuntary psychiatric internment after clinicians found Álvarez posed a ‘certain and imminent’ risk, and the defendant was moved from Hospital Tornú to the Solar Colonial clinic in Castelar.
  • The tribunal set short procedural deadlines: peritos must be named within three working days, the evaluation should be completed within five days, and judges indicated they could rule on the trial’s future by October 13 if those deadlines are met.
  • The defense pushed for the new pericia and named its own experts while the prosecution and the querella reportedly declined to present specialists, leaving the Cuerpo Médico Forense team to lead the assessment including at least a psychiatrist and a psychologist.
  • Álvarez, the former leader of Viejas Locas and Intoxicados, is accused of the July 12, 2018 killing of Cristian Maximiliano Díaz allegedly by four shots; prior conflicting medical reports have already shaped the trial and raise the risk of further suspensions or procedural challenges.
