Overview
- Hersl died on Oct. 5 in Kingsville, Maryland, according to a death notification filed by his probation officer and signed by U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher.
- He was granted compassionate release in January 2025 because of a terminal diagnosis after an earlier request was denied in October 2023.
- Court filings say he was diagnosed in February 2023 with prostate cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes, liver, and lungs, and prison doctors projected less than 18 months to live.
- A federal jury convicted him in 2018 of racketeering, robbery, and overtime fraud, and he received an 18-year sentence that had been set to run until 2031.
- The Gun Trace Task Force was found to have robbed residents, dealt drugs, and falsified overtime, and Hersl’s record drew numerous complaints as he later issued a written apology during his illness.
