Court Poised to Decide Tony Mokbel’s Bail After 18 Years in Custody

The Victorian Court of Appeal will soon rule on whether the convicted drug trafficker can await his appeal under strict bail conditions.

Tony Mokbel has been in custody since 2007, following his arrest in Greece after fleeing Australia while on bail.
He is appealing his drug trafficking convictions, citing misconduct by his former lawyer Nicola Gobbo, a police informer, as a miscarriage of justice.
Mokbel has applied for bail, offering to comply with stringent conditions, including GPS monitoring, a curfew, and daily police reporting.
His sister, Gawy Saad, has pledged $850,000 in surety and promised to report him if he violates any bail conditions.
The Court of Appeal’s imminent decision could grant Mokbel his first taste of freedom in 18 years, pending his appeal later this year.
