Court Orders Karen Reichardt to Lead LLA Buenos Aires Ticket After Espert Resigns

LLA plans an appeal, with opponents pressing her to debate before the Oct. 26 vote.

Overview

  • Federal judge Alejo Ramos Padilla ruled that Karen Reichardt must head La Libertad Avanza’s Buenos Aires deputy list following José Luis Espert’s resignation, citing enforcement of gender parity and list replacement rules.
  • La Libertad Avanza will appeal to the National Electoral Chamber to try to install PRO deputy Diego Santilli, though case law favors the judge’s approach and the printed single ballot is unlikely to be changed this close to the vote.
  • Ramos Padilla rejected the party’s reliance on Decree 171/2019 to preserve sequence and, according to one report, deemed article 7 unconstitutional for this vacancy, keeping the ascending order intact.
  • Opposition candidate Jorge Taiana publicly challenged Reichardt to a series of five themed debates to be broadcast from venues such as the Garrahan Hospital, a public university, a stalled public-works site, the Malvinas Museum and an industrial plant.
  • Old posts from 2015 in which Reichardt insulted Lionel Messi resurfaced and went viral, prompting her to delete them and characterize the comments as a “football tantrum.”
