Overview

  • On 17 July 2025 the Court of Appeal quashed Errol Campbell’s 1977 convictions for theft and conspiracy to steal from the Bricklayers Arms Goods Depot.
  • The appeal was referred to the court in February 2025 by the Criminal Cases Review Commission after Campbell’s son applied in September 2024 with support from the charity APPEAL.
  • Campbell is the final member of the Stockwell Six—Windrush generation immigrants whose convictions rested on fabricated evidence—to have his name cleared.
  • DS Derek Ridgewell and colleagues DC Douglas Ellis and DC Alan Keeling admitted in 1980 to stealing around £364,000 in goods from the depot, and Ridgewell died in prison before completing his sentence.
  • Lawyers are urging reforms to mandate automatic reviews of cases overseen by officers later convicted of misconduct to prevent similar miscarriages of justice.
