Court Greenlights SIT Investigation and 90-Day Charge Sheet in Dalit Youth Murder Case

Months after a fresh probe was ordered, the court empowered a state-appointed SIT to re-examine the 2022 killing with a 90-day deadline for its supplementary charge sheet.

Overview

  • The Rajamahendravaram Special Court approved a Special Investigation Team to re-open the case and ordered additional charges to be filed within three months
  • The SIT is headed by ASP Manish Devraj Patil with legal advisor Muppalla Subba Rao after the TDP-led coalition government mandated a fresh inquiry in April
  • Veedhi Subrahmanyam’s family has pressed for a CBI investigation, alleging the previous administration influenced police and overlooked key technical evidence
  • Subrahmanyam, a Dalit and former driver of YSRCP MLC Ananta Uday Bhaskar, was killed in May 2022 and his injuries were initially misrepresented as a road accident
  • Bhaskar was arrested and suspended from YSRCP but secured default bail in December 2022 when the original charge sheet was not filed in time
