Court Confirms On-Demand Viewers Don’t Need UK TV Licence

Authorities warn that licences remain mandatory for live streaming, BBC iPlayer or any live broadcast despite mass cancellations since the ruling.

Overview

  • Kirkby father Lee Stuart won at Sefton Magistrates Court after proving he only used on-demand services and not live TV
  • TV Licensing guidance now exempts viewers of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other catch-up platforms from the £174.50 annual fee if they avoid live content and BBC iPlayer
  • More than 500,000 households have cancelled their TV licences since the ruling and may claim refunds for any unused months
  • Enforcement continues through a 31 million-address database, visiting officers and detector vans with penalties of up to £1,000 for unlicensed live viewing
  • Concessions include free licences for over-75s on Pension Credit, half-price fees for blind or severely sight-impaired households and reduced rates for students and care home residents
