Court Clears November Auction of Hudson’s Bay Art and Artifacts

The 1670 royal charter will be handled in a separate Reflect-run process pending court approval.

Overview

  • Ontario Superior Court approved a sale of roughly 1,700 artworks and about 2,700 artifacts from Hudson’s Bay’s retail era.
  • Heffel Gallery will run online auctions starting Nov. 12 and a live event in Toronto around Nov. 19, with a full lot list to be posted on its website beforehand.
  • The royal charter is excluded from these sales, with a separate auction plan to be considered at a Sept. 29 court hearing for approval of Reflect Advisors as auctioneer.
  • Twenty-four items believed to be of Indigenous origin have been removed for return or donation, and the company says any further such pieces identified will also be pulled.
  • Reflect Advisors reports interest from Indigenous groups, public institutions and private buyers, and Hudson’s Bay says its war memorials will be donated to organizations that commit to public display.
