Court Approves Live Broadcast of Yoon Suk Yeol’s New Trial Opening, Bars Bail Hearing Coverage

Judges invoked a statute that favors public access at the special counsel’s request, leaving the bail proceeding off camera.

Overview

  • Friday’s first session of the separate martial law–related trial will start at 10:15 a.m. at the Seoul Central District Court and be aired in full with personal information anonymized.
  • The bail hearing will follow immediately after the trial opening; media may film the courtroom beforehand, but live coverage of the bail proceeding was denied and the court will explain its reasons during the session.
  • Yoon has missed his insurrection trial for the 11th straight session after the detention center said it could not produce him, and the bench is proceeding under provisions that allow hearings without the defendant.
  • He remains in custody after a rearrest on July 10, and the court said it granted the broadcast at the special counsel’s request citing the public’s right to know under the Special Counsel Act.
  • The new case centers on allegations that he violated Cabinet members’ rights, issued a revised proclamation after declaring martial law, obstructed detention by investigators, and ordered deletion of call records and distribution of false statements.
