Courier Banned After 11 Breaches of Wales’s 20mph Limit in 35 Days

The prosecution highlights strict enforcement of Wales’s 20mph default credited by ministers with fewer collisions.

Overview

  • Gregory Williams pleaded guilty at Mold Magistrates’ Court to 11 speeding offences recorded between September 4 and October 9 last year.
  • Ten offences were captured by a fixed camera on the A5104 at Pontybodkin, with a further offence in nearby Mynydd Isa.
  • Magistrates imposed 37 penalty points, a six‑month driving ban and a £600 fine on Williams, who previously had a clean record.
  • Williams told the court he was a courier in an unfamiliar area and mistook the route for a 30mph zone, noting that notices arrived after multiple breaches had already occurred.
  • Wales’s 20mph default remains in place, with officials citing a 19% collision reduction and about 100 fewer serious casualties each year, as enforcement data show 97,088 offences in North Wales in 2024 and more than 134,000 drivers caught since rollout alongside a 470,000‑signature petition and industry cost claims up to £9bn.
