Coupang Breach Triggers U.S. Punitive-Damages Filing After Regulator Orders Revised Notice

Police report no confirmed secondary harm from the leak so far.

Overview

  • U.S.-based SJKP, a branch of Korea’s Daeryun law firm, says it will file a punitive damages suit in a U.S. court and seek additional plaintiffs at a New York press conference.
  • The firm told local media it also plans to pursue related lawsuits in Korea following Coupang’s disclosure that about 33.7 million user accounts were affected.
  • Coupang issued a new customer notice using the term “data breach” per the Personal Information Protection Commission’s directive and stressed there has been no new leak.
  • The company says leaked data included names, emails, phone numbers, delivery details, shared entrance codes and some order histories, while no payment data, passwords or customs clearance codes were compromised.
  • Coupang reports the intrusion appears to have originated via overseas servers since June 24, says it blocked the access path, strengthened monitoring and is cooperating with multiple government agencies.
