Coupang Announces 1.68 Trillion-Won Voucher Compensation as Police Question Breach Probe

The plan faces swift consumer pushback because most of the value is limited to travel and luxury coupons.

Overview

  • Coupang will issue 50,000 won in coupons to each of 33.7 million affected accounts, beginning Jan. 15, in a package the company values at roughly 1.68 trillion won.
  • Only 5,000 won is usable on Coupang’s main shopping service and 5,000 won on Coupang Eats, with the remaining 40,000 won restricted to travel and R. LUX luxury products, drawing criticism from consumer groups.
  • Seoul police said Coupang failed to disclose its own analysis of a suspect’s laptop when handing it over and warned the firm could face serious accountability if false or manipulated data is found.
  • Government officials said the company’s forensic claims remain unverified by the joint public–private investigation, and a task force signaled wide-ranging measures, including a Fair Trade Commission review that could consider a business suspension.
  • Founder Bom Kim issued his first public apology but declined to appear at this week’s parliamentary hearings, as the company maintains a former employee saved data on about 3,000 accounts and later deleted it.
