Countdown Champion Faces Court Over Alleged Stabbing of Rival

John Cowen is accused of attacking fellow contestant Thomas Carey at a quiz event in Blackpool.

John Cowen, a former Countdown champion, appeared at Preston Crown Court charged with wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.
Thomas Carey, also a former Countdown champion and a Cambridge maths graduate, was hospitalized with an arm injury following the incident.
The alleged attack occurred during the Countdown in Blackpool 2024 event, an annual tournament for former winners of the TV quiz show.
Cowen, who competed on Countdown in 2017, was arrested at the scene and has been remanded in custody until a further hearing on December 6.
The event is known for bringing together past winners and fans of the Channel 4 gameshow in a competitive setting.
