Council Proposes Euthanasia for Dog Involved in Chermside Mauling

Brisbane City Council has moved to put the surviving dog down to limit public risk during the owner's remaining legal review period.

Overview

  • Two bulldog-cross dogs attacked runner Ajay Malik in Seventh Brigade Park, Chermside on October 16, leaving him with serious injuries to his face, arms and legs.
  • Police shot both animals during the response, one dog later died from its wounds and the second was surrendered to Brisbane City Council for safekeeping.
  • After receiving no appeal within the initial 14-day window, the council issued a dangerous-animal declaration and a proposed destruction order for the surviving dog, which remains in council custody.
  • The owner, Layla Evans, has statutory rights to seek an internal review within 14 days and then an external review within 28 days, and she could face state prosecution with penalties up to AU$120,890 or two years' imprisonment.
  • Separately, a 48-year-old man's body was found in nearby bushland during the police response, a postmortem suggested he died the same day as the mauling, and forensic testing is ongoing to determine the cause and any link to the attack.
