Council Moves 98-Year-Old With Dementia to Cheaper Care Home After Savings Run Out

Relatives say a 48-hour transfer after her funds fell below the £23,000 threshold left her distressed.

Overview

  • Brenda Miles had lived at Innage Grange in Bridgnorth since 2020, self-funding roughly £4,000 a month from about £240,000 in savings and home-sale proceeds.
  • When her assets dropped under the means-test limit, Shropshire Council declined to fund Innage Grange and arranged a place at Hilton Brook House costing about £2,400 a month.
  • The move took place on 31 October after the family was given two weeks to act followed by only 48 hours' notice to leave the original home.
  • Her niece, Victoria Fellows, called the relocation inappropriate for a 98-year-old with dementia and said the new room lacks an ensuite and personal belongings remained at the former home.
  • The family sought help from South Shropshire MP Stuart Anderson without success, and the council declined to comment on the individual case.
