Overview

  • B.C. Parks and Whistler Blackcomb have closed Rubble Creek, Singing Pass, Musical Bumps and key biking trails on Blackcomb Mountain until further notice.
  • The B.C. Conservation Officer Service reported multiple aggressive cougar incidents over the past two weeks, including stalking hikers and chasing mountain bikers near Garibaldi Lake and in Whistler.
  • Conservation officers are patrolling the area and reassessing trail statuses daily as they gather data on cougar movements.
  • Hikers are urged to travel in groups, carry bear spray, secure food and other scents, and, if confronted, fight back by targeting the cougar’s face and eyes.
  • Wildlife experts suggest the cougars’ bold behavior may stem from human encroachment or young adults establishing territory and assessing humans as potential threats.
