Overview

  • Glenn Manning discovered two iron cavalry spatha swords near Willersey in 2023 and donated them to the Corinium Museum in Cirencester.
  • Historic England’s geophysical surveys have revealed multiple prehistoric features, including three Iron Age ring ditches and a large rectangular enclosure.
  • Joint excavations in January uncovered Roman limestone building fragments and possible underfloor heating tiles suggesting a winged villa.
  • Further digs are planned to build a case for a scheduling recommendation to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
  • The rare cavalry swords will be displayed at the Corinium Museum starting August 2.
