Costco Won’t Dispense Abortion Pill, Religious Investors Hail Win

The faith-based coalition behind the campaign plans to press CVS and Walgreens to follow suit

Overview

  • Costco Wholesale Corp announced it will not dispense mifepristone at more than 500 pharmacies, citing weak consumer demand.
  • A coalition including Inspire Investing and Alliance Defending Freedom called the decision a victory and said it will target CVS Health Corp and Walgreens Boots Alliance next.
  • CVS and Walgreens remain the only national chains certified under the FDA’s REMS program and continue dispensing mifepristone in states where abortions are legal.
  • Telehealth and mail-order prescriptions for the drug have grown to account for about a quarter of US abortions, up from roughly 5 percent before the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling.
  • State attorneys general and legislators have pursued letters and bills to reinstate prior dispensing rules and to ban or restrict medication abortion further.
