Coroner: Snowdon Crib Goch Fall That Killed 36-Year-Old Was Accidental

The inquest recorded death from multiple injuries due to a fall from height.

Overview

  • Thomas Alan Smith, 36, fell about 30 metres then tumbled at least 150 metres on August 16 while training for a 100-mile ultra-marathon.
  • A witness said he reached for his spaniel-type dog on a three-metre lead and lost his footing on the exposed ridge.
  • A British Army Reserves medic called 999 at 11:41am, reported catastrophic injuries, and could not begin CPR because of unstable scree.
  • Llanberis Mountain Rescue and a winch-equipped search-and-rescue helicopter recovered Mr Smith, and the dog survived.
  • Senior coroner Kate Robertson concluded the death was an accident and described the circumstances as unintended, unexpected, and incredibly tragic.
