Coroner Says Lightning Killed Two Elk Hunters Found in Colorado Backcountry

Preliminary autopsy points to an indirect strike, with a full report expected in eight to ten weeks.

Overview

  • Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko, both 25, were found Sept. 18 about two miles from the Rio De Los Pinos trailhead in Conejos County after a multi-day search.
  • Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin said the men were killed by lightning and likely were not directly struck, noting no significant external injuries.
  • Authorities reported no signs of foul play, consistent with an incident linked to fast-moving storms in the high-elevation South San Juan Wilderness.
  • The pair were last heard from Sept. 11, and deputies found their vehicle with gear inside on Sept. 13, complicating efforts to track their movements.
  • More than 50 trained teams and volunteers used drones, dogs, horseback units and aircraft during the search, according to the sheriff's office.
