Coroner Rules Superyacht Chef’s 2023 Drowning in France an Accident

Evidence from CCTV, with toxicology indicating severe alcohol impairment, underpinned the finding.

Overview

  • At Bournemouth Coroner’s Court on 22 October 2025, Coroner Brendan Allen concluded that Flinn Sessions died as the result of an accident.
  • CCTV presented to the inquest showed the 22-year-old alone on the La Ciotat quayside, staggering near a bollard before falling into the water and attempting to reach the yacht’s stern.
  • Post-mortem tests in France and the UK confirmed drowning, with a blood-alcohol level of 2.9 g/L that the coroner said would impair coordination, reflexes and risk awareness.
  • Captain Alistair Lacock found Sessions’s body at about 6:30 a.m., noting the yacht’s entry alarm had not been triggered and the gangway remained in place.
  • Family members voiced concern over the absence of ropes or escape ladders on the quay or yacht, describing the death as preventable.
