Overview

• On July 22, 2025, Birmingham coroner Emma Brown recorded Lucy Powell’s death as unlawful killing by smothering and Gregory Duhamel’s as suicide by hanging
• Investigators heard that Duhamel left a note revealing his anger and intention to kill both himself and Powell following their relationship breakdown
• A post-mortem examination confirmed Powell, who was under 12 weeks pregnant and mother of two, died from asphyxiation consistent with smothering
• Detective Chief Inspector Laura Harrison stated there was no indication of third-party involvement and that evidence existed to charge Duhamel had he survived
• Powell’s family described her as a devoted, hardworking mum and carer who adored her children and had plans to move on from the relationship
