Coroner Opens Inquest Into 5-Year-Old Aria Rose George’s 2024 Death

The inquiry will explore whether earlier care was possible following scans indicating a catastrophic brain bleed alongside preliminary evidence of acute myeloid leukaemia.

Overview

  • Senior coroner Aled Gruffydd opened the case at Swansea’s Guildhall and set a full hearing for April 29, 2026.
  • The investigation will consider whether earlier treatment could have been provided for a condition not previously known to the family.
  • Aria became unwell during the week of September 23, 2024, saw her GP and Neath Port Talbot Hospital, and was initially sent home with medication.
  • After her condition worsened, she was transferred to the University Hospital of Wales, where scans showed a global intracerebral bleed with hydrocephalus and a CT thorax revealed pulmonary emboli.
  • Following consultations with haematology, neurosurgery and critical care, she received supportive care and died at 1:38pm on September 27, 2024, with a proposed cause of non-traumatic intracerebral haemorrhage and acute myeloid leukaemia.
