Coroner Identifies Victim in Lancaster County Horse-and-Buggy Fatal Crash

Police say the minivan driver showed signs of impairment, leading to DUI homicide charges with a preliminary hearing set for Jan. 14.

Overview

  • Authorities identified the victim as Mary Ruth Stoltzfus, 65, of Paradise, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • State police say a Dodge Caravan rear-ended the buggy around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Strasburg Road near Hoover Road in Salisbury Township.
  • An affidavit says the impact ejected Stoltzfus, the buggy detached from the horse, and the minivan came to rest about 487 feet from the initial crash.
  • Troopers identified the driver as Danial R. Miller, 33, of Mertztown, who allegedly showed signs of impairment, failed sobriety tests, refused initial testing, and later had blood drawn under a warrant.
  • Miller is charged with homicide by vehicle with DUI and related offenses, is held at Lancaster County Prison on $125,000 bail, and is due before Magisterial District Judge Raymond Sheller on Jan. 14.
