Coroner Identifies Six Workers in Suspected Toxic Gas Deaths at Colorado Dairy

Officials say the men likely succumbed in a confined space, with OSHA investigating as autopsy and toxicology results remain pending.

Overview

  • Six men were recovered Wednesday from a confined space at Prospect Valley Dairy near Keenesburg after a rescue call around 6 p.m., authorities said.
  • Friday, the Weld County Coroner released the identities: Jorge Sanchez Pena, 36; Alejandro Espinoza, 50; Oscar Espinoza Leos, 17; Ricardo Gomez Galvan, 40; Noe Montanez Casanas, 32; and Carlos Espinoza Prado, 29.
  • The coroner reported preliminary evidence of lethal gas exposure; four of the victims were related and one was a Highland High School student.
  • Three additional people were treated at UCHealth Greeley Hospital and released, and the sheriff’s office reported no indication of criminal activity.
  • OSHA has opened an investigation into the workplace incident, and responder radio traffic described a burst pipe and possible high levels of unknown gases, including hydrogen sulfide, in the confined space.
