Coroner Identifies 7-Year-Old Recovered After Big Sur Surf Tragedy as Anzi Hu

A volunteer diver found the child following a multi-agency weekend search during hazardous high surf at Garrapata State Beach.

Overview

  • Authorities said Anzi Hu, 7, of Calgary, was recovered Sunday and her father, 39-year-old Yuji Hu, died at a hospital after being pulled from the water.
  • The child was swept from the shoreline by waves estimated at 15 to 20 feet during a National Weather Service beach hazards event.
  • Volunteer diver Juan Heredia of the Angels Recovery Dive Team located Anzi about 100 yards offshore and roughly a half-mile north of her last known location, and next of kin have been notified.
  • An off-duty California State Parks officer and a beachgoer helped bring the father to shore and performed CPR, while the mother was treated for mild hypothermia and a 2-year-old at the scene was unharmed.
  • The search effort involved the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Coast Guard, county search-and-rescue teams and CHP air support, and officials say the family has requested privacy as responders plan a debrief on wellness needs.
