Overview

• On June 13, 2025 coroner Laurinda Bower ruled that Sgt Saville’s August 2023 death was wholly preventable due to multiple missed opportunities by Nottinghamshire Police.
• The inquest found a delay in the force’s control room contacting Network Rail prevented any evasive action by train drivers.
• Nottinghamshire Police had no formal policy or training for incidents on or near railway lines, leaving officers without clear instructions to stay off tracks.
• Saville’s family said the investigation revealed “shocking and disturbing” duty-of-care failures by the force.
• Following the ruling the force overhauled control room protocols, implemented new railway-risk assessments and delivered targeted training to officers and dispatchers.
