Coroner Finds Mother's Influence Contributed to Paloma Shemirani's Death After She Rejected Chemotherapy

The coroner found she probably would have survived with chemotherapy.

Overview

  • Kent and Medway coroner Catherine Wood ruled the influence of Kay and Faramarz Shemirani "more than minimally" contributed to the 23-year-old’s death.
  • Doctors diagnosed non-Hodgkin lymphoma in December 2023 and advised steroids, a PET scan and chemotherapy with about an 80% chance of recovery, which Paloma initially appeared to accept.
  • After returning to her mother’s home, she pursued an alternative regimen of strict diet, juices and frequent coffee enemas, which the coroner described as "incomprehensible" care.
  • The coroner declined to find unlawful killing and concluded Paloma likely would have survived with chemotherapy, as her brothers publicly blamed their mother for obstructing treatment.
  • Evidence included a 999 recording showing a friend was called before an ambulance when she collapsed on 19 July 2024; she died on 24 July of an unsurvivable brain injury after prolonged cardiac arrest.
