Cork Man, 25, Charged With Murder of Mother and Assault of Father

A judge remanded him in custody with a recommendation for urgent psychiatric evaluation.

Overview

  • David Gallagher, of Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough, appeared at Cork District Court charged with murdering his mother, Stella Gallagher, 59, and assault causing harm to his father, Brian.
  • He was arrested at the scene on Monday night after Gardaí responded to reports of an assault outside the family home and he made no reply when the charges were put to him.
  • Stella Gallagher was taken to Cork University Hospital and pronounced dead before midnight, while Brian Gallagher, 62, underwent emergency surgery and remains in a serious but stable condition.
  • Investigators recovered a blood-stained kitchen knife, sealed multiple locations for forensic examination, appointed a senior investigating officer and family liaison officer, and appealed for CCTV or dash-cam footage from 8:30pm to 9:30pm Monday.
  • The case proceeds as Gardaí continue a formal murder inquiry in Ballinlough, separately to an unrelated fatal stabbing in Hollyhill days earlier that is also under investigation.
