Overview

• COPA released bodycam video on June 10 depicting Chicago officers pursuing a gun suspect from the Far South Side into Hammond, Indiana.
• Footage shows the suspect, identified as 50-year-old Joseph Navarro, crash his vehicle, emerge with a gun, and fire at approaching officers.
• Officers returned fire, fatally wounding Navarro, who later died at St. Catherine Hospital.
• Both officers involved were treated for observation and have been placed on at least 30 days of administrative duties.
• The investigation remains active as COPA works with the Chicago Police Department’s Investigative Response Team.
