Coordinated Highway Robberies Hit Puno and Ayacucho Routes Over Weekend

Police are investigating coordinated highway assaults targeting remote interprovincial routes.

Overview

  • On the JuliacaLa Rinconada corridor, armed, hooded assailants intercepted more than a dozen public transport vehicles, seized ignition keys, and robbed passengers of cash, phones, and, according to witnesses, gold.
  • At least one passenger, identified as Alfredo Ramos Paye, was shot during the mass assault near Condorake and Pampilla, where victims reported being stranded in areas without phone coverage.
  • In a separate incident on the Lechemayo–Andahuaylas road, a transport driver named Gladimer was shot in the leg and his Toyota Hilux was taken after attackers reportedly placed large rocks to force a stop.
  • Police activated containment operations, recovered the stolen Hilux near the Ocobamba–Rocchacc boundary, and referred the case to the Ministerio Público as part of ongoing inquiries.
  • Investigators in Puno are probing whether a Toyota Hilux with plate CBF-765 used by the attackers was cloned or stolen, while residents demand stronger patrols on these vulnerable routes.
