Overview
- Juhu police registered an FIR against Sameer Abdul Jabbar Shaikh, 35, after he allegedly attacked three on-duty doctors when his 57-year-old mother was declared dead during emergency care at Cooper Hospital.
- Officers said the case was filed under the Maharashtra Medicare Protection law and relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections, and the accused was allowed to leave after being served a notice.
- The casualty medical officer Dr Gaurav Anandgaonkar, intern Dr Prashant Bhadke, and resident doctor Karan Desai sustained injuries during the late-night assault captured on CCTV.
- Medical bodies including Central MARD, BMC MARD, FAIMA, and ASMI condemned security lapses, citing guards’ failure to intervene and demanding immediate arrest, suspension of negligent staff, and trained, preferably armed, security in high-risk areas.
- The BMC deployed additional guards at Cooper and scheduled top-priority meetings for Monday as resident doctors staged protests and threatened to halt non-emergency services across KEM, Sion, Nair, and Cooper without firm security reforms.
