Cook County Deputy Fatally Shot by Stray Bullet While Vacationing in Turks and Caicos

Shamone Duncan, a 20-year veteran corrections officer, was killed during a rooftop birthday celebration as gunfire erupted outside a restaurant.

The shooting also claimed the life of local resident Dario Stubbs, 30, and injured a 29-year-old man, with authorities stating none of the victims were targeted.
Duncan, a Cook County corrections officer for over 20 years, was known for her dedication to justice, family, and community service, including her involvement in charitable work.
Her son described her as a natural leader whose instincts to help others may have led her to stand up during the chaos, resulting in her being fatally struck.
Turks and Caicos police are investigating the incident but have not yet identified suspects or made arrests, while Duncan’s family has criticized the emergency response as inadequate.
