West Bengal transferred Superintendent of Police Dyutiman Bhattacharjee to commandant of the third battalion of the State Armed Police and named Sandeep Karra as the new district police chief.
Residents had accused the SP and accompanying personnel of assaulting neighbours, including women and minors, during a confrontation over late-night firecrackers near his bungalow.
Advocate Mallika Karji reported injuries and filed a complaint while informing the Bar Council of India, and CCTV footage purporting to show the SP beating people circulated online without independent verification.
Bhattacharjee denied the assault allegations, saying repeated warnings were ignored as crackers were burst until 1 a.m., with some landing inside his residence.
After protests, police arrested 10 people for blocking the Cooch Behar–Tufanganj State Highway; three women, including Karji, received bail, five were remanded to police custody, two to judicial custody, and the next court appearance is set for October 24.
