  • Jordano Gotopo-Lopez, a 38-year-old Venezuelan, convicted of murder in 2006, was living in Massachusetts state-funded housing provided for migrants; his location was found due to his failure to report to immigration authorities within 60 days of his illegal entry to the United States.
  • Gotopo-Lopez managed to cross the southern border through Eagle Pass, Texas, in July, but did not disclose his criminal history during his processing which led to issuance of notice requiring him to report himself for immigration.
  • His arrest was made on October 27, within the premises of a migrant facility operated at the Joint Base Cape Cod in Bourne, Massachusetts, by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  • Upon apprehension, Gotopo-Lopez confessed to his criminal charge of murder conviction in Venezuela, leading to proceedings for his immediate removal or deportation while remaining in custody.
  • The ERO Boston Field Office Director, Todd M. Lyons emphasized the commitment of his team to identify, apprehend, and seek the removal of unlawfully present fugitives who pose a real threat to public safety, with a note on the infringement against the hospitality of Massachusetts by such individuals violating the norms of the immigration system.
