Overview

• Jonaiki Martinez-Estrella was found dead this week at Coxsackie Correctional Facility while serving a 25-to-life sentence for second-degree murder.
• He had been resentenced in May after a 2023 appellate court overturned his first-degree murder conviction over a torture finding.
• Martinez-Estrella was originally convicted in October 2019 of inflicting the fatal neck wound that killed 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz during a 2018 mistaken identity attack.
• At least 13 other members of the Trinitarios gang have since pleaded guilty or been convicted for roles in the Bronx bodega slaying.
• The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has not released Martinez-Estrella’s cause of death or responded to requests for comment.
